The twenty-seven blankets reproduced were woven by Hispanics in New Mexico from the mid-nineteenth century to about 1940. A concise history of the Rio Grande blanket, from Coronado's Entrada into New Mexico (1540) to the arrival of the railroad (1879), is followed by an analysis of how the Rio Grande blanket was viewed, collected & studied by scholars & artists since 1900.
